Culver Battery an impressive remnant of the Palmerston Follies that dot the Island, and were built in the mid 19th Century to protect Portsmouth from the French. Battery begun 1861, completed 1863. It was in use until 1956 when it was filled in, though some excavation has since taken place. It mounted a pair of 9.2-inch guns and is now a viewing point at Culver Cliffs only traces now remain.
