Constructed between 1863 and 1868, sixty metres above the north west coast of the Isle of Wight , this unique hexagonal barrack building, the only one of its kind, had the height, strength and strategic position to help counter what was then perceived as a serious attack from across the Channel. A six sided structure, it was a land rather than a sea defence fort and acted as a barracks for the gunners manning the nearby batteries. The fort was built as part of the Palmerston defences between 1863 and 1869, as a coastal defence in the West Wight. Situated in a commanding position, the area was kept clear of vegetation to allow views out to the Solent. The name Golden Hill refers not to the spectacular golden display of gorse but to an historic landowner, Gauden. It has been used as an industrial park, but is now being turned into housing.
